New barn:
2010 saw the completion of our new American barn which includes 44 stables, an indoor ride which is a furlong round and two horse walkers. Light and airy with good ventilation and CCTV, this barn and in particular the indoor ride has proven to be an invaluable asset. The horses gather here every morning before exercise allowing Richard to have a good look at them and give instructions before they head out onto the gallops
American barn/Stables:
In addition to the ‘New Barn’ we have five American barns and a number of outdoor stables which together span a 5 acre area. The fillies and colts are stabled in separate barns and an 18 box stable block is set up as a quarantine yard for new horses joining the string minimizing the risk of virus’s been brought in.
All weather & Grass gallops:
The all weather gallop is just under a mile long with a three and a half furlong chute. The MacTrac surface consisting of wax coated sand reduces kick back and never freezes making for an excellent year round gallop.
In addition we have a mile grass gallop for use in the summer providing conditions are favourable.
Starting stalls:
We have a 3 bay set of starting stalls.
Schooling hurdles/fences:
Running parallel to the all weather gallop we have 5 flights of hurdles and 3 plain steeplechase fences.
Turn out paddocks:
We have 32 small post and rail paddocks designed specifically for turning out racehorses in training. We believe it is essential for their wellbeing offering a change of scenery, relieving possible boredom, allowing them to unwind, have a jump and a kick and generally enjoy themselves.
We also have a number of larger paddocks which we use for horses having a break or recuperating after an injury.
Horse walkers:
We have six covered horse walkers, four of which can exercise up to 6 horses at any one time; the other two can exercise 5 and 8 horses at any one time. We use the walkers on a daily basis for cooling off after morning exercise and after a ‘work morning’ we’ll pop the horses on for an ‘easy day’. In addition, horses coming back from injury or coming back into training after time off can start out on the walker doing gentle exercise gradually building up fitness.
Lunge ring:
The lunge ring has an all weather surface making it available year round. In addition to lunging we find it particularly useful for breaking the yearlings and getting them ridden away prior to introducing them to the indoor school. As it is enclosed it provides a safe environment for both horse and rider.
Panama spa:
The Panama Spa was installed in 2004 and is one of those things we wonder how we survived without. It produces amazing results on horses with lower leg injuries or ailments and is particularly beneficial to some of the older horses with niggling little problems. It reduces inflammation, increases circulation and generally speeds up the whole healing process. Horses are very relaxed in the spa and genuinely appear to enjoy it.
Vets Box:
In the interest of safety we designated a stable in a quieter area of the yard for all veterinary work. With a rubber matted floor and sides, all general examinations, x-rays, scanning and scoping is conducted here, seriously reducing the risk of injury.
Transport:
We have a two stall horse box, a four stall, a seven staller plus our most recent acquisition a nine staller. The four, seven and nine stall horse boxes include air suspension, air conditioning and fans in the back which control the temperature for the horses and of course cctv allowing us to transport our horses from Musley Bank Stables to the race course with minimal stress.
Forge: We are very lucky here at Musley Bank Stables in that we have our own Forge and three excellent Farrier's giving our horses second to none hoof management every day of the week.
Security:
Musley Bank Stables is fully equipped with CCTV and all activities are monitored closely.
