Life after Musley Bank Stables

It is important to all at Musley Bank Stables to find the best homes possible

for racehorses retiring from racing whatever the reason.

director of SEIB, and Di Arbuthnot, director of operations at Retraining of Racehorses & Elverys (inset)

Former racehorse Elverys, now thirteen, was trained by Richard until he retired from racing four years ago. Re-homed by Charlotte at Snainton Riding Centre the handsome bay gelding is on the verge of a highly successful career in dressage.

Charlotte says: “Elverys was quite a handful to retrain initially but he loves his dressage.”  Patience though, as is often the case, has paid off with Charlotte explaining: “Elverys competes at Medium level Dressage and we are aiming towards advanced next year. He won the ROR Elementary Dressage Championships at Vale View on 11 November 2011 and more recently he won his second National Award for finishing runner-up in the SEIB & ROR Elite Performance Dressage Award; an award for the highest points accumulated in British Dressage between January 2011 and November 2011.”

NORTON GROVE STUD is situated literally just five minutes from Musley Bank Stables. Several Fahey trained fillies have gone on to be 'Mums' there! More than several !!

A family run stud with 98 acres and more than 60 stables in peaceful surroundings with a friendly atmosphere Richard, Maggie and daughter Tina together with their dedicated team provide 24 hour care to any horse which arrives at their home.

They provide a number of services which include boarding for barren and maiden mares, mares in foal, mares with foals, yearlings, racehorses at rest and more.

The Stud also stands three stallions, their most recent acquisition Monsieur Bond, sire of crack sprinter Hoof It, Group 1 winning filly Gilt Edge Girl and the smart Ladies Are Forever to name but three.

Tina says: “In the last couple of years we have foaled up to 90 mares, we have CCTV and our vet is only ten minutes away but thankfully he has not been overworked. Still, it is peace of mind knowing he’s just up the road!”

“Richard (Fahey) trained probably ten or twelve of the mares which board here, our most recent arrivals being Cracking Lass and Nicola’s Dream. Several mares have 2yo’s and 3yo’s already in training at Musley Bank Stables!”

RF Racing Ltd received an email from Charlotte on 3rd December 2011. She is delighted with Shay Dream Believer and Elverys who were re-homed in 2008.

Charlotte says; Shay is used a little to train the York University Equestrian Team and he hunts with the Derwent weekly! Elverys is a dressage horse, competing at Medium level, hopefully to go advanced next year. He won the ROR Elementary Dressage Championships at Vale View on 11 November 2011 and was featured in the Gazette & Herald recently.”  (See Below)

Charlotte Wilson flew the flag for the former racehorse when she took the top honours at the Retraining of Racehorses Dressage Championships at Vale View Equestrian Centre on Friday.

The journey to Leicestershire proved fruitful for Charlotte when she delivered a highly polished performance, riding Elverys, to win the Elementary test with an excellent score of 66.47 percent.

Formerly trained at Malton by Richard Fahey, Elverys retired from racing three years ago and went on to be based with Charlotte at Snainton Riding Centre. The 12 year old bay gelding has since gone on to a highly successful career in dressage.

“Elverys was quite a handful to retrain initially” explains Charlotte, “I competed him lightly at novice level last summer when he won 50 points and qualified for the regionals at Novice level”

This year Elverys made his debut at Elementary and continues to go from strength to strength, delivering a series of very consistent performances. He has gained another 50 points while competing in Medium classes this summer.

“I heard about the ROR dressage championships from a friend, but only decided to give it a go two weeks ago. Elverys had not competed since July so I took him to Richmond a couple of weeks ago as a warm up.”

The combination travelled to Vale View the day before the Championship. Elverys coped well with the atmosphere of the high profile event and performed the best test of the season to win a huge trophy, a beautiful rug and £300 in prize money.

“I think he has come on so much, and in all my riding and competition experience, it was the most fulfilling win because he has come so far” said Charlotte, whose goal for next year is to train Elverys to an advanced dressage horse.

The Retraining of Racehorse series has become hugely popular since its launch and provides a platform to demonstrate that a correctly re-schooled racehorse really can be turned into a top class riding horse."

     Vettori Firefox (Rocky)

Vettori Firefox (Rocky) with owner Jon Porteus

A 2006 gelding by Elmaamul, still un-named when leaving Musley Bank Stables in September 2009, is hoping to go eventing next year. Officially named Vettori Firefox, but better known as 'Rocky' to those familiar with him, Jon has been riding and schooling him and is delighted with his progress and potential.

MAJOR POP                                                                                        MAJOR POP & Izzy Humphreys

Major Pop, a 2007 well bred son of Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus out of an A. P. Indy mare, found a new home with his owner’s daughter, Izzy, after disappointing on the track. Izzy brings us up-to-date and proves not all well bred thoroughbreds are meant to be racehorses!!

Major came to me in June 2010. He was frisky and jumpy when I got him but to see him now you would find it hard to believe. He is fabulous; probably the most laid back horse in the yard! I am hoping he will qualify for UK Riders Nationals Finals in show jumping this year. His jumping has improved massively and he has already qualified for the semi finals. He has so much potential, it’s very exciting and hopefully he will just keep improving. The sky is the limit! At the moment he is ridden and schooled every day and jumps on a weekend. It has taken time to get where we are now with him but it has been worth every minute. He is one of my absolute favourites!  (August 2011)

       Pitti Sing (nearest)

Ginny collected PITTI SING from Musley Bank Stables on August 20th 2011.

Here she is meeting her new friends (above) and enjoying her freedom! (top right)

Barnie Magoodle

BARNIE MAGOODLE (pictured left) made his racecourse debut at Hexham in April 2009. He won but was forced to retire through injury shortly afterwards.

In November 2010 he found an amazing home at Castle Howard, just down the road from Musley Bank Stables. Christine says; “He’s bit of a celebrity here at Castle Howard and has a life of luxury. We hack out and intend competing in racehorse to riding horse classes this year.”

STATESIDE found a new home in July 2010. Charlotte, her new owner, brings us up-to-date:

“On leaving Musley Bank Stables Stateside, or ‘Tatty’ as she is now known, was turned out in a field with Rio who, incidentally, is another ex Fahey racehorse. We wanted her to settle into her new home before we started to do anything with her. Since the first day she arrived she has been a dream to deal with and one of the things we love is that she is so good at having her feet picked out, picking each foot up for us when we ask her. (Taught well at Fahey’s!!) We started riding her in April of this year and she behaved very well. We hacked her out around the farm and then took her further and she was an angel although she did snort loudly at a very big ditch! In May we took her over to a riding school and within two lessons Tatty was trotting in an outline and cantering round on both reins. She is now jumping and she really uses herself like a professional show jumper and she is improving at dressage too. We are absolutely thrilled with Tatty and totally adore her”

(July 2011)

Georgie gave COTTON SPIRIT a new home in November 2010 when he was only a 2 year-old.

Georgie says: “We turned him out for six months when we got him to allow him time to grow up and just ‘be a horse’. We have started riding him again recently and he has been foot perfect so far. He is such a character in the yard and we have discovered that he loves sipping tea and ribena but he’s not so keen on coffee! He has such nice paces he wouldn't look out of place in pure dressage competitions but we hope to event him when he is old enough”

Butterwick Chief:

Since retiring from racing in 2005 'Chief' as he is now known, is enjoying life hacking out in the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside. Claire Sutton, the proud owner, has also competed with him including dressage competitions and show jumping. She says she is absolutley thrilled with her first 'ex-racehorse' and is amazed at how 'chilled out' he is, so much so her four year old nephew can ride him!!
